Web of Relationships

Sr. Ps. Anna Button | 3rd March 2021

In my opinion, in today’s culture, certainly in Western society, (the politically correct global north), our lives are so intertwined with the internet, (the world wide ‘web’), that we would be lost without it!

I want to introduce you to another web. It’s what I like to call a ‘Web of Relationships.’ I believe that our Web of Relationships is far more important to our wellbeing, than the world wide web and yet we too often give it so little time and thought. Right here, I put my own hand up because I am guilty of this very thing!

Let’s go back to the start and look at what God did when He created the earth. I will sum it up for you. In the beginning God created the world, He made light and dark, day and night, water and land, birds and animals. As He made each thing, He declared it to be good. Then He made man, and for the first time He said, ‘Something’s not right.’ (My words, not His ?). Genesis 2 verse 18 says, Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him” (NLT).  The man himself was not necessarily faulty or bad, it was because the man was alone that God declared things as ‘not good.’

So, my first point is that we are created for community. We are not meant to live life alone. God does not even exist alone! He is God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. He created us in His image, and He created us for communion. First of all, communion with Him, and then communion with each other. I like to refer to this as community.

One version of the meaning of communion puts it as: the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially on a mental or spiritual level. This leads me to my second point. We are created to experience life together. In life, when all is said and done, the only thing that will last is people. In the end, the only thing that really matters is our relationships with others. All our accomplishments, our possessions, our titles, our financial goals, our career goals, our family/marriage goals, and everything in between all pale into insignificance when placed beside eternity.

Matthew 18 verse 20 tells us, Where two or three are gathered in My name, I Am among them (Gods Word Translation). This is a magnificent mystery! As we come together, sharing our lives with each other, we experience God in a way that is impossible individually. God loves unity amongst people. Just ask Him!

Thirdly, we are designed by God to be interdependent. We are designed by God to be interconnected into a network of relationships. A Web of Relationships! These networks can include friends, family, co-workers, mentors, and special interest communities. Jesus lived this kind of life when He walked the earth. And He created/called His community to work with Him.

Be encouraged. 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 11 tells us, Therefore, encourage each other and strengthen one another as you are doing (Gods Word Translation). As we continue to walk in Him and encourage one another to walk in Him, we will see that we need people, and people need us!

May you be blessed in Jesus name,
