The Hole in Your Heart

Pastor Anna Button | 13th of May, 2021

Did you know that creation sings praises to God? The heavens and the earth worship God. (Psalm 148, Isaiah 55, Psalm 19).

Our society, on the other hand, worships many things today. Sadly, not enough of us worship the One Who alone is worthy of worship.

What is worship?

Noun: the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.

Verb: show reverence and adoration for a deity.

What is the root meaning of the word worship? Etymology. The word is derived from the Old English weorþscipe, meaning to venerate “worship, honour shown to an object, which has been etymologised as “worthiness or worth-ship”—to give, at its simplest, worth to something.

I was talking with a friend the other day and she relayed a conversation to me that she had with another friend recently. She told me how she explained what Jesus meant to her in a way that her friend could understand – she said that “Jesus fills a hole in my heart that no one else can.”

Many of us are looking for something, something that we do not fully understand, something to fill the void inside of us that we cannot explain. No amount of money, material goods, friendships, lovers, children, job satisfaction, wealth, cars, physical fitness, fame, or anything else can fill this void. Jim Carrey certainly knows it.

My favourite Jim Carrey quote-“I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.” – Swaminarayan Glory

I believe the One Who created us is the only One Who can fill the void in our hearts. And He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He can satisfy the longing that we feel when everything is going wrong in our lives, and He can satisfy the longing we still feel when everything is going right. God created us for relationship. Firstly, for relationship with Him, and secondly, for relationship with each another.

When we stop looking for the answer to the hole in our hearts everywhere, and accept Jesus into our heart, we will find that we no longer need to look, and we no longer have a void. That ‘hole in the heart’ that my friend talked about can only be filled by God. I know this to be true, and I pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to find this truth for yourself.

We are created to worship the One Who is worthy of ‘worth-ship,’ the only One to which we should give worth. God Almighty is the only One Who is worthy of our worship. As we realise this truth and begin to walk our journey of life with Him, giving Him the worship He deserves, the ‘hole in our heart’ will be filled.

Be blessed,
